HOTEL & RESORT GROWTH STORY

Umngazi Hotel & Spa already had something marketing cannot manufacture: a remarkable product, a loyal guest following and a powerful sense of place.

The opportunity was not to reinvent the brand.

It was to build a stronger digital ecosystem around it — one capable of introducing Umngazi to new travellers while converting more existing demand into direct customer relationships.

Eco Africa Digital brought together performance marketing, SEO, email, content, premium tourism video, audience growth and conversion strategy around one connected approach.

The challenge

Umngazi is not a conventional hotel.

Its remote Wild Coast setting, strong repeat-guest culture and deeply experiential product are central to what makes it special.

That also means its marketing cannot simply compete on rooms and rates.

Potential guests need to understand the experience.

They need to see the destination.

They need confidence in the journey.

And they need enough emotional connection to imagine themselves there.

At the same time, Umngazi wanted to strengthen digital demand and build more direct relationships with its customers.

The challenge was therefore bigger than generating more website traffic.

We needed to connect discovery, storytelling, conversion and customer ownership.

The opportunity

Umngazi already had significant brand equity.

Our role was to make that strength work harder digitally.

We identified opportunities to:

  • Increase visibility among new audiences
  • Strengthen direct website demand
  • Create more compelling digital content
  • Improve search visibility
  • Build the customer database
  • Support repeat communication
  • Retarget interested travellers
  • Create stronger links between marketing channels

Rather than treating each activity separately, we brought them into one coordinated growth strategy.

Building the digital growth ecosystem

PERFORMANCE MARKETING

Paid media helped introduce Umngazi to new audiences while capturing travellers already showing relevant intent. Google and Meta played different roles across the customer journey — from discovery and inspiration to remarketing and conversion. Campaigns were continuously refined according to audience behaviour and performance.

SEO & SEARCH VISIBILITY

Organic search created an important long-term opportunity. We strengthened content and search visibility around Umngazi itself, the Wild Coast destination and the kinds of travel experiences relevant to its guests. The objective was not simply more organic traffic. It was more relevant discovery from travellers considering this type of experience.

CONTENT THAT SELLS THE FEELING OF UMNGAZI

Umngazi is difficult to understand through functional hotel information alone. The location, landscape, people, activities and atmosphere are part of the product. Content therefore became a central part of the strategy. We developed storytelling across digital channels that helped communicate not only what Umngazi offers, but what it feels like to be there.

Premium tourism video

Working with specialist tourism production partners, we created high-quality visual content designed to capture the Umngazi experience authentically.

The content was planned to work across:

  • Website
  • Social media
  • Paid campaigns
  • Email
  • Search and digital content

Rather than treating video as a once-off brand film, the aim was to create assets that could continue supporting the wider customer journey.

Growing an owned audience

Generating demand is valuable.

Owning the relationship with that audience is even more valuable.

Database growth therefore formed an important part of the strategy.

We created opportunities for interested travellers to remain connected with Umngazi beyond their first website visit.

That allowed the brand to continue communicating through:

  • Email
  • Offers
  • Destination inspiration
  • Seasonal messaging
  • Repeat-guest communication
  • Remarketing

During the first quarter, the customer database grew by 83%.

Turning traffic into direct enquiries

Increasing website traffic is only worthwhile if the website can convert that interest into action.

As digital demand increased, we focused on the path from:

discovery → website → consideration → enquiry

The result was a 168% increase in direct enquiries during the first quarter, alongside a 220% increase in website users.

The combination matters.

The strategy was not simply attracting more visitors.

It was creating substantially more direct commercial opportunity from that increased visibility.

The results

+220%

WEBSITE USER GROWTH

A substantial increase in the number of travellers discovering and engaging with Umngazi online.

+168%

DIRECT ENQUIRIES

More travellers moved from digital discovery into direct conversations with the hotel.

+83%

DATABASE GROWTH

Umngazi strengthened its owned audience, creating future opportunities for direct communication, repeat bookings and customer nurturing.

What the client says

“Eco Africa Digital has helped us significantly increase our direct bookings and visibility.”

The strongest result, however, is not one individual percentage.

It is that the different parts of Umngazi’s marketing began working together more effectively.

From campaigns to a growth system

Umngazi demonstrates the principle behind the Eco Africa Digital Growth System™.

DISCOVER

Search, paid media and content introduced the hotel to more travellers.

ENGAGE

Strong storytelling, photography and video created desire.

CONVERT

Website journeys and performance marketing moved more visitors toward direct enquiry.

CONNECT

Database growth allowed Umngazi to build relationships beyond the first visit.

GROW

Email and remarketing created further opportunities with known audiences.

LEARN

Performance data continuously informed what happened next.

Growth became a connected loop rather than a collection of separate campaigns.

Why this story matters

Umngazi did not need a louder version of generic hotel marketing.

It needed digital marketing that understood what made the business valuable in the first place.

The technology, media and channels were there to amplify that.

Not replace it.

That is the approach we believe works particularly well for distinctive African tourism brands:

protect what makes the product remarkable — and build a better digital growth system around it.

Want to build stronger direct demand for your hotel or resort group?

You may already have the website, content, customer data and marketing channels.

The opportunity may be in making them work together more effectively.
