We landed at King Shaka International, hit the road toward Sodwana Bay, and five hours later found ourselves on a wild 4×4 track to Thonga Beach Lodge. Guided by Godfrey, a local from Mabibi, we were transported through forests, rolling dunes, and sandy tracks until the Indian Ocean revealed itself in full force.
Perched on an ancient dune inside the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Thonga Beach Lodge stopped us in our tracks. It’s the only lodge permitted on this UNESCO World Heritage Site’s coastline – a testament to its genuine partnership with the local community. That evening, under a starlit sky, waves as our playlist, and wine in hand, we realised: the magic of Thonga is impossible to capture in a brochure.
Snorkels, Synchronised Whales, and Soul Food
Our sunrise walk took us down a private stretch of beach where not a single footprint marked the sand. Later, we took to the water. Dolphins danced at the bow, turtles glided beneath, and just as we thought it couldn’t get better… a humpback whale and calf gave us the show of a lifetime. This is the kind of content we live to capture – wild, emotional, and rare.
